PRELIMINARY CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) CREDENTIAL
The Yolo-Solano Center for Teacher Credentialing is an approved Program Sponsor through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the Designated Subjects (DS) CTE Credential. Our program evaluates CTE credential applications (preliminary and clear) and makes credential recommendations to the CTC. As a part of our program we provide a series of sequenced coursework and mentoring experience that prepares new CTE credential candidates to become effective CTE teachers.
The Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge. CTE Credential holders have increased job opportunities, help students connect college preparation with post-secondary career readiness, work with career pathways and connect schooling to the industry sectors.
The Preliminary CTE Credential is issued by the CTC. It is valid for three years and authorizes the CTE candidate to teach one or more subjects in the industry sector named on the credential in grades twelve and below and in classes organized primarily for adults in career technical, trade or vocational courses. Your employing school district must determine, based on your work and educational experiences, which particular subjects you may teach within the industry sector.

CTE teachers teach in a wide variety of settings. The CTE Credential allows someone who holds the credential to teach in K-12 setting and education settings primarily for adult education. A majority of CTE programs will be found in the 6-12 grade educational settings. CTE teachers may also work in private, for-profit or nonprofit vocational schools that may focus on one area of study or multiple areas of study. Another setting for CTE instruction in public education is in the Regional Occupational Programs (ROP) and Adult Education systems. ROP and Adult Education classes are often free to the participant and provide coursework related to career preparation and skill development. See your local county office of education for more information on CTE, ROP and Adult Education programs offered.
Preliminary CTE Credential Application Process
Here are a number of items that will assist with getting your application packet together. The Preliminary Application Checklist is the most helpful and has links to several of the other documents.
Once you have the items on the checklist completed, you will meet with the CTE Program Director in a CTE Advisement Meeting to go over everything before we apply for your credential. Please contact Grant Ermis (CTE Program Director) or Taryn Tyrell (YSCTC Program Manager) if you have questions about any of the items below.

- CL-888 is the Commission for Teaching Credentials document available online and is the most comprehensive information guide. This is purely for your reference and informs you as to what is required for both the preliminary and clear credential.
- Preliminary Application Checklist is a document from our program and lists the documents needed for your application. We must send in the application on your behalf from our office.
- 41-4 is the application for the Commission. This needs to be filled out and brought to our advisement meeting. You will fill out sections 1, 4, 5 and 7.
- Authorization Selection Form is the Industry Sector you are seeking. Please refer to CL-888 for clarification of options.
- Experience Verification: this document will clearly explain what information is needed to verify your experience. This is used along with your resume.
- Employment verification: To complete the requirements for the preliminary credential, you must be teaching in the context of one of the CTE Industry Sectors you are applying for. Your district will fill this form out for you, and needs to verify FTE allocated to CTE courses.
Once you have the items on the checklist completed, you will meet with our CTE Program Director, Grant Ermis, to go over everything before we apply for your credential.
